''City water system to be revamped by 2001''

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MAY 20. Metrowater has shifted its approach from breakdown maintenance to preventive maintenance, said its Managing Director, Mr. C. P. Singh.

He said the entire water system in Chennai city would be completely revamped by 2001.

Addressing grievances of customers at a meeting organised here today by Exnora Innovators' Club-T.Nagar, Mr. Singh said Metrowater was initiating several measures as part of its strategy to reorient its operations. It had mobilised one-third of the amount for the creation of a Rs. 100 crore fund meant for preventive maintenance.

Appealing to customers to bring their grievances to the notice of the office, Mr. Singh said within ``our limitations, we would try to improve''. Admitting that there were gaps in the water supply and sewage disposal network, he said the agency had ``very little options'', making it imperative for the people to lay equal emphasis on conserving water. People should closely examine the option of harvesting rain-water.

Mr. V. Subash Chandran, vice-chairman, Exnora International, stressed the need to make rain harvesting compulsory for every household. Much of the problems related to water scarcity could be solved through optimal utilisation of the natural resource.

Residents of second street Madley Road, first street Bharathi Nagar, Motilal street, second main road CIT Nagar, second street Ramakrishnapuram voiced their complaints related to inadequate and poor quality of water supply. Some highlighted the inefficiency of the sewage disposal system, while others sought additional common tanks for storage of drinking water in their areas.
