By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MAY 20. The Mambalam Police have initiated action against the owner and employees of a store on Ranganathan Street, T.Nagar, for abusing and wrongfully confining a woman customer on May 18.

Mr. S. Rajendran, Deputy Commissioner, Guindy, said the customer, Ms. Saraswathi of Avadi was detained at the shop for over 6 hours as the management thought she had attempted to lift some sarees. She was let off only late in the night.

Hearing the plight of the woman, who owns a medical shop in Avadi, some TMC members of Avadi sought permission from Mambalam Police on May 19 to demonstrate in front of the shop. Denying permission, the Deputy Commissioner ordered a detailed investigation. Meanwhile, some TMC members, who attempted to raise slogans against the store, were allegedly attacked by the staff of the shop.

Mr. Rajendran said, investigation revealed that the owner of the store and a few of his employees were at fault. Two members of the store, Sabapathy and Shahira were picked up by the police on Friday and later let off.

The Tamil Nadu Vannigar Sangangalin Peravai has issued a statement in support of the trader and charged the police with biased action.

Mr. Rajendran said this was the fifth such instance at the shop.
