Tamil medium: Govt. to file appeal in SC
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MAY 20. The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to go on
appeal against the High Court order quashing the GO on compulsory
Tamil medium for all students from Standard I to V in all
schools.
The school education department, which has just received a copy
of the full bench order, has decided in principle to go on appeal
before the Supreme Court. A senior education department official
confirmed that the appeal will be filed shortly.
Meanwhile, the committee that was constituted to lay down an
adapted syllabus for classes I to V, for schools that adopt Tamil
as the medium of instruction has submitted their report. The
Education Department will shortly approve the syllabus, which
matriculation schools willing to switch over to the Tamil medium
will adopt. The members of the committee were drawn from the
Matriculation Board, departments of elementary education,
teacher's training and other educationists.
The revised syllabus is only `marginally different' from the
matriculation syllabus, sources add. ``We are only adapting it in
terms of the medium of communication; it will not be a switchover
to the State board'', they explain. As far as nursery sections
are concerned, the existing kindergarten syllabus will be
followed by the neo-converts to Tamil medium.
Meanwhile, in anticipation of the Government's appeal, two
organisations, the Tamil Nadu Tamil and English schools
Association and the Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary, Matriculation
and Higher Secondary Schools Managements Association have already
filed caveats.
