BJP chief issue may come up by month-end
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MAY 20. The question of taking a decision on who
should be the next president of the BJP is expected to come up at
the end of this month or early next month when organisational
elections are completed in at least half the States.
So far there have been no formal or even informal consultations
on the issue, senior party leaders said today, adding that the
new party president could be elected by about the third week of
June. In several States - Uttar Pradesh for instance -
organisational elections have been delayed. Since Bihar is also
not expected to complete the process in time, it could mean that
both these States may be left out of the electoral college for
the national president.
Mr. Jana Krishnamurthi, senior vice-president, when asked about
the issue today, said that the various names doing the rounds in
media reports ``do not carry much weight, as the top leaders are
yet to discuss and finalise who should be the next party
president.''
Under the party's constitution, Mr. Kushabhau Thakre, can be
elected for a second tenure, as he has had only one two-year
tenure as party president, which was under the ``old
constitution.''
