Kiribati qualifies but cannot go
AUCKLAND, MAY 18. One of the smallest nations in the world has
qualified for the Sydney Olympics - but cannot go because it
doesn't belong to the International Olympic Committee, the
regional news agency reported on Tuesday.
Kirbati, a Micronesian nation of 40,000 people, caused an upset
at the Oceania weightlifting championships in Nauru in recent
days by coming third in the men's Olympic qualifying event behind
Nauru and New Zealand, and ahead of Australia.
Secretary-General of Oceania weightlifting, Paul Coffa described
the result as `remarkable.' ``It surprised everyone,'' he said.
``They have gone ahead of American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga.''
