Accused questioned in wealth case

CHENNAI, MAY. 18. The accused in the `disproportionate wealth
case' against the former Commercial Taxes Minister, Mr.
Sathyamurthy, were today questioned under Cr.P.C. section 313 by
the Special Judge-II, Mr. V. Radhakrishnan.
After completion of evidence by all prosecution witnesses, the
Judge had posted for today questioning of the accused.
Accordingly, besides Mr. Sathyamurthy, the other six accused -
his wife, Mrs. V. Chandra, in-laws, Mrs. M. Thangammal and Mr.
Mayalaguthevar, sister-in-law, Ms. Anjali Devi and two other
relatives, Ms. Pushpavalli and Ms. Nagavalli - came to the court
today and were questioned.
The prosecution case was that during the check-period - from
January 1, 1992 to May 13, 1996, Mr. Sathyamurthy had accumulated
wealth to the tune of Rs. 83 lakhs which was disproportionate to
known sources of his income.
A total of 113 prosecution witnesses was examined in the case.
The chargesheet was filed on November 4, 1997 and trial started
on November 11, 1998.
