Interim stay on property tax scheme

BANGALORE, MAY 18. The Vacation Bench of the Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered an interim stay on the operation of the controversial self-assessment scheme for property tax evolved by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP).

The Bench, consisting of Mr. Justice K.H.N. Kuranga and Mr. Justice K. Sreedhar Rao, stayed the scheme on a batch of public interest writ petitions, including an interlocutory application (I.A.). The case has been posted for further hearing on May 29. The Bench directed the BMP not to insist that the residents adopt the impugned scheme.

The judges ordered that the resolution adopted by the BMP on March 13, 2000, should not be given effect to for the collection of property tax on the basis of self-assessment of the tax, until further orders.
