Indian girls beat Australia

NEW DELHI, MAY 13. They may have lost the race for qualification, but the Indian girls showed their mettle by beating the third- seeded Australia 3-0 in a positional match of the Asia-Oceania World Youth (under-16) Cup qualifying tournament in Jakarta on Saturday.

The Indian girls, who had lost the quarterfinals to the second- seeded Chinese Taipei, after a good fight against the top-seeded Indonesia in the league, thus put themselves in line for the fifth place, and will meet New Zealand, which beat Korea, on Sunday.

The Indian boys, however, were unable to win their match, and went down to Thailand, after Jaco T. Mathew lost the first singles in a three setter that featured two tie-breaks.

Thus, the Indian boys will meet Korea which lost to New Zealand 1-2, in the match for the seventh place.

Chinese Taipei and Australia won their matches against Hong Kong and China respectively, in confirming their place in the World junior event to be held in Japan. Hong Kong and China will fight it out for the third and last qualification berth.

In the girls section, Korea and Chinese Taipei confirmed their qualification with identical 2-1 victories over Indonesia and China respectively. The third qualification spot will be decided between Indonesia and China.

lThe results (positional matches): Boys: Thailand beat India 3-0 (Tara Tanthasuwanalert bt Jaco T. Mathew 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7- 5); Anuwant Dalodom bt Amanjot Singh 6-0, 6-3; Tara and Anuwant bt Amanjot Singh and P. Vishal 7-6 (7-1), 6-0).

Girls: India beat Australia 3-0 (Isha Lakhani bt Kimberley Coventry 6-0, 7-6 (7-5); Megha Vakharia bt Darya Ivanov 7-6 (7- 2), 6-3; Isha Lakhani and Samrita Sekhar bt Darya and Samantha Stosur 3-6, 6-1, 6-3).
