Help Lankan Tamils on humanitarian grounds: MDMK
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI, MAY 7. The MDMK general secretary, Mr. Vaiko, expressed
hope last night that the Tamil Eelam, for which the LTTE has been
long waging a struggle, will become a reality soon.
Declaring open the new party building, he said that the Indian
Government should extend all possible help to the Tamils in
Jaffna on humanitarian grounds.
Mr. S. Natarajan, district secretary of the party, presided.
Messrs. M. Kannappan, Union Minister of State for Non-
Conventional Energy, Mr. Gingee Ramachandran, Union Minister of
State for Textiles, Mr. L. Ganesan, chairman, MDMK general
council and others poke. Mr. A. Malarmannan, Tiruchi city
secretary, welcomed the gathering.
Road closed
The closure of the Tiruchi-Karur national highway for movement of
vehicles for over 12 hours yesterday in view of the opening of
the MDMK new office building caused much hardship to the public.
Since all vehicles proceeding from Tiruchi to Karur were diverted
via Musiri and Kulitalai, there were frequent traffic jams on the
Tiruchi-Musiri road.
Commuters wondered how the authorities could permit the closure
of traffic on a national highway for permitting a political party
to organise a party function. They recalled how the MDMK had
demolished a portion of the building constructed in violation of
the rules, in the same site two years ago after it was served
with a notice by Tiruchi Corporation.
Ordnance unit sought
PONDICHERRY, MAY 7. The Pondicherry-based Dravida Peravai has
urged the Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes, to set up an
ordnance factory or tank factory in the Union Territory to tackle
``unemployment.''
Mr. N. Nandhivarman, general secretary of the Peravai, said here
today that at present there was no major centrally sponsored
factory in Pondicherry.
