TRC president assails PMK stand on LTTE

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI, MAY 6 The Pattali Makkal Katchi should support the stand of the NDA government on the Sri Lankan issue, and if cannot do so it should quit the government, the TRC president, Mr. Vazhapadi K. Ramamurthi said here today.

Mr. Ramamurthi pointed out that the LTTE was a banned organisation, in the country, but the PMK was taking undue advantage of its position in the NDA government to support the LTTE and its Tamil Eelam plans. If it did not review the stand it had taken at the meeting of the state executive at Tiruchi yesterday, it will have to face the consequences, he warned.

Appreciating the `matured' stand of the Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, he appealed to all political parties in the state not to complicate the issue by counselling the Centre on how to deal with the situation. The country's Sri Lankan policy has always been to protect the unity and integrity of the island nation. The chauvinist political parties in the state should not take any stand that would pose a danger to this.

He took strong exception to the support extended by the PMK to the LTTE, which has been harping not only about an independent Eelam, but on a larger Tamil nation, comprising Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu itself.

He said the LTTE got money for purchase of military hardware by smuggling drugs through India, and noted that in recent months, drug smuggling from Tuticorin and Chennai had risen sharply. He suspected large scale smuggling of diesel, petrol, food and medicines through the coast, to LTTE and wanted the Police, Coast Guard, and Navy to tighten security.
