ACB rules out review of Warne-Waugh case
SYDNEY, MAY 5. The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) ruled today out
a review of the case of Shane Warne and Mark Waugh who were fined
five years ago for providing weather and pitch information to
bookmakers.
The two were sanctioned after supplying the information during
Australia's 1994 tour of Sri Lanka but the matter was not made
public until December, 1998.
The ACB chief executive, Mr. Malcolm Speed, said there would be
no review as Warne and Waugh had already been tried.
The ACB formally adopted the International Cricket Council's
(ICC) mandatory life bans on players found guilty of match-
fixing, announced on Wednesday after an emergency ICC meeting at
Lord's.
In a statement the ACB also said it would convene a conference
with the leaders of Australia's other major sports to identify
common strategies to tackle corruption in sport.
The Australian captain Steve Waugh said he supported the
initiatives which he hoped would help restore the game's
credibility after the Hansie Cronje scandal.
``Any threats to the integrity of our game needs to be tackled
aggressively,'' Waugh said. ``I hope these initiatives start to
re-build any trust in the game that may have been lost and that
people recognise that players and administrators are united in
the determination to keep this evil out of our game.''
