ENDLF seeks E.Timor-type solution
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, MAY 5. The Eelam National Democratic Liberation Front
(ENDLF) today demanded that India take the initiative to bring
about an East Timor-like solution to the Sri Lankan crisis.
``A solution to the ethnic problem can be brought about by action
similar to that taken by the United Nations in East Timor,'' the
ENDLF general secretary, Mr. G. Gnanasekaran, said in a
statement.
Arguing that it was pointless to ``forcefully unite'' the
Sinhalese and Tamils, he said ``separation is the only solution
in the prevailing condition.''
Calling for ``Indian intervention'' in Sri Lankan affairs, he
said the intervention of other countries would disturb the peace
in Asia. ``India has the moral duty and responsibility to
safeguard the prevailing peace in Asia,'' he added. By hesitating
to intervene, India would only pave the way for other countries
to interfere in Sri Lanka. But India should not repeat its
earlier approach of trying to find a political solution within a
united Sri Lanka as that effort had been defeated by the Island
Nation, he added.
