Thousands witness Srirangam car fete
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI, MAY 2. Tens of thousands devotees witnessed the annual
Chithrai Car festival at the Sri Ranganathaswami Temple in
Srirangam today. Thanks to the presence of the unprecedented
crowd, within four hours the Car went through the four Chitrai
streets and reached its base. Being a very good agricultural
year, people from rural areas of Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur
districts thronged the temple from Monday night onwards. The
conversion of scores of coconut groves in the Srirangam area into
apartments forced people to stay overnight on the main road from
Amma Mandapam to the temple, and also on all roads around the
temple.
The temple car was flagged off at 6.15 a.m. and it returned to
base without any hitch around 10 a.m.
Over 500 heads of cattle, including about 300 calves, were gifted
to the temple by the devotees and a spokesman of the temple said
the same would be auctioned in a few days as the temple does not
have facilities to maintain such a large number of animals.
