CM should quit: Swamy

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MAY 2. The Janata Party president, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, today demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, for failing to protect the interests of the State in the Mullaperiyar Dam, Cauvery and Krishna waters issues.

Addressing presspersons here, he charged Mr. Karunanidhi with not presenting the State's problems and requirements in full during discussions with the Kerala Chief Minister, Mr. E.K. Nayanar, on the Mullaperiyar issue. Mr. Karunanidhi's government had also not been successful in resolving the Cauvery and Krishna water issues.

He alleged that the Chief Minister had ``surrendered'' before the RSS and that LTTE activities were being allowed in the State. The LTTE movement in Nagapattinam, Rameswaram and Vedaranyam now was the same as it was nine years ago.

The Chief Minister had also not been highlighting, with the Centre, the requirements of the State. He challenged Mr. Karunanidhi to come out with a white paper on what his Government had got for the State during its current tenure.

He released copies of a letter he had addressed to the Congress (I) president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi, in which he had sought her role in the formation of a new front in Tamil Nadu under the leadership of the TMC president, Mr. G. K. Moopanar.

Reiterating his call for an alternative front in the state, minus the DMK and the AIADMK, the letter said the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. J. Jayalalitha, was in the grip of a coterie. Hence it was important to form a new front under Mr. Moopanar and project him as the Chief Minister. The letter suggested that the MGR-ADMK leader, Mr. Thirunavukkarasu should also be in the front.

An alternative front should be formed at the Centre also. First the squabbles within the Congress should be resolved and only then a front could be formed.

Dr. Swamy said he had written a book on the Rajiv assassination case. The book would be released in New Delhi on May 22.
