Globalisation must be equitable: IPU
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MAY 2. The Inter-Parliamentary Union president, Dr.
Najma Heptullah, has said that the organisation was committed to
making globalisation equitable, people-centric and gender-
sensitive. Speaking at the inauguration the 103rd IPU conference
in Amman (Jordan) today, she said that the IPU planned a
specialised conference along with other multilateral trade
institutions, like the WTO, on these issues.
Dr. Heptullah, Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, said
parliamentarians must be involved in trade negotiations. Closer
cooperation between the IPU and the United Nations was also
necessary and an agreement to that effect had already been
signed. In the next few days, the IPU would adopt a blueprint for
cooperation in the next century, she said.
King Abdullah II of Jordan inaugurated the conference, which is
also being attended by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G.M.C.
Balayogi.
