Thousands witness Tiruvarur Car festival

THANJAVUR, MAY 1. The Car festival of Sri Thyagarajaswamy Temple at Tiruvarur was held today.

The giant Car, weighing 300 tonnes at a height of 96 ft, was pulled by thousands of devotees including the Tiruvarur Collector, Mr. C. Uma Shankar, Commissioner, HR and CE Department, Mr. S. Savarkar, hereditary trustee, Mr. Ram. V. Thiagarajan, Nagapattinam MP, Mr. A.K.S. Vijayan, and Tiruvarur MLA, Mr. Asokan.

Pujas were performed in the morning with the people queueing up to have a `darshan' of Lord Thyagaraja. The decorated Car, started its journey at 6.30 a.m. Bulldozers were used to push the Car from behind. Police led by the SP, Tiruvarur district, Mr. Rama Subramani, made elaborate bandobust arrangements.

Temple town of Tiruvarur wore a festive look with devotees converging from various parts of the state for the Car festival.

Tiruvarur is known for the temple, big tank named Kamalalayam and the Car. One of the Nayanmars, Sri Thirunavukarasar described the Car as ``Azhither'' while Sekkizhar hailed Tiruvarur as ``Therurum Veedhi Tiruvarur'' (streets of Tiruvarur known for Car festival). The temple is one among the ``panchaputhasthalas'' and one among the ``sapthavidangasthala'' of Lord Thyagaraja. Mr. Savarkar later told presspersons that renovation of 300 temples were going on at a cost of Rs. 57 crores.
