Houselisting operations begin

CHENNAI, MAY 1. The first phase of the Census of 2001 began today, with the houselisting operations scheduled to go on till May 31.

During the operations, particulars on building or census house, households and amenities available to the household will be taken.

The major heads under which the information was being gathered were building number, census house number, floor, wall and roof material, use and condition of house.

Particulars of whether the households belonged to SC/ST, the ownership status, number of dwelling rooms, married couples, and the number of these couples with independent rooms for sleeping would be covered.

In the case of amenities, drinking water source and its availability within the premises or nearby, fuel used, drain and latrine, bathroom, kitchen, radio/transistor, television, telephone, cycle, scooter or other two wheelers, four wheelers and banking services were included.

The aim was to collect information to take the housing stock, while details of population will provide a frame for delimitation of blocks for the second phase of the census - population enumeration to be conducted from February 9 to February 28, when details of individuals will be collected.

The information to be collected during the operations would be kept confidential under the Census Act, 1948, said an official release. The records, registers and schedules could not be inspected by anyone nor were they admissible as evidence in judicial proceedings.
