May Day celebrated
NEW DELHI, MAY 1. (Uni)May Day was celebrated across the country
today with workers resolving to forge greater unity to protect
their rights.
Trade unions and social and voluntary organisations held rallies,
gate meetings and interactions to find ways and means to resist
the new economic policies which, they said, were playing havoc
with the lives of the working classes.
The Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, in a message on the
occasion, said: ``May Day strengthens our commitment to the
welfare of the workers and to evolve a more productive work
culture in the country.''
Addressing the protestors who began their march from Mandi House,
the trade union leaders took strong exception to the Vajpayee
Government's move to introduce the ``Trade Unions Act, 1926
amendment bill'' in the Rajya Sabha. The bill, they said, sought
to curtail the rights of the workers.
