Allies to keep up pressure for rollback
The allies and supporting parties of the BJP
are willing to strike but afraid to wound on the price hike
issue. A meeting of the representatives of the allies and
supporting parties here today decided to continue to pressure the
Government to reconsider the recent price hikes but at the same
time categorically ruled out backing the proposed cut motions on
the Finance Bill by Opposition parties.
Article 370 will stay: Advani
The Union Home Minister, Mr. L. K. Advani,
today categorically ruled out scrapping of Article 370 which
confers special status on Jammu and Kashmir, saying there was
nothing relating to the provision in the agenda of the National
Democratic Alliance.
Govt. invites Christian bodies for talks
The Centre has invited representatives of
over 20 Christian organisations in the country and 22 Christian
Members of Parliament for talks here on April 28. Those invited
include representatives from the Missionaries of Charity, the
Churches of North India, prominent members from the Roman,
Catholic and Syrian Churches, besides representatives of social
and educational institutions.
Hijack plot in Colombo?
India has received credible information that
a passenger aircraft from Colombo international airport could be
hijacked. According to highly placed Government sources, the
hijack being planned could be similar to that of the Ariana
airlines plane. The Ariana aircraft, which was on a domestic
flight in Afghanistan, was hijacked to London after stopovers in
two Central Asian destinations and Moscow in early February.
Warrant against Ardbo
The Special Court for CBI cases today issued
a fresh non-bailable warrant (NBW) for the arrest of Mr. Martin
Ardbo, former president of AB Bofors and one of the accused in
the `Rs. 64-crore Bofors payoffs case' after the CBI informed the
court that the earlier NBW was still under process.
Another arrest in IC-814 hijack case
The West Bengal police have arrested a
person believed to be the mastermind behind the hijacking of the
IC-814 Indian Airlines plane to Kandahar (Afghanistan) last
December. Belal alias Lalu Mian was arrested on Tuesday night
from a hideout near the Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24
Parganas district following a tip-off.
Nishant test-flown
Nishant, the indigenously
built unmanned air vehicle (UAV), was test-flown from the interim
test range here today, defence sources said.
Naval ship to carry water to Gujarat
``INS Shakti'' of the Indian Navy will
carry eight million litres of drinking water to drought- hit
areas of Gujarat within a week. It will leave Mumbai for either
Kandla or Mundhra.
Arguments conclude in coal import case
A Supreme Court bench on Wednesday reserved
orders on a special leave petition filed by the Tamil Nadu
Government against a Madras High Court judgment upholding the
discharge of the AIADMK leader, Ms. Jayalalitha, in the
controversial Rs. 6.50-crore coal import case.
World Bank approves $ 750 m aid for India
The World Bank has approved nearly $ 750
millions in loans for several projects in India, bulk of the
money being allocated to developmental schemes in Uttar Pradesh.
On Tuesday, the bank cleared a $ 512-million package for three
projects aimed at assisting economic and social development in
the State.
