U.S. enforces Elian-father reunion
Elian Gonzalez and his father, Mr.Juan Miguel Gonzalez, have been reunited after four and a half months at the Andrews Air Force base shortly after 9:30 this morning. Little Elian was taken away by force this morning by Federal Agents of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service after the Justice Department decided to put its foot down on the custody issue concerning the Cuban lad. Elian's father has been in this country for the last three weeks waiting for the reunion to take place.

LTTE 'claims' military complex
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) today claimed control over the significant Elephant Pass military complex, which guards the northern Jaffna Peninsula.

President back with specific gains
According to the President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, the two specific gains of his ``very productive and fruitful visit'' to Paris were: 1) the French Government's categorical public assurance of support to India's candidacy for a permanent seat in the U.N. Security Council, and 2) its reiteration of the resolve to establish a defence relationship in a big way.

'A reflection of Indian media reports'
The President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan, feels that the French newspapers' description of him as an untouchable is a reflection of what the Indian media had been writing in the past three years. As far as he was concerned, he had no resentment, Mr. Narayanan said.

Govt. notifies IRDA
The Government is understood to have notified the constitution of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), which will initially be located in the capital. The present Chairman of the Authority, Mr. N. Rangachary, has been re-appointed and he would now have an extended tenure till June 2003. Other two whole-time members, Mr. H. Ansari and Mr. H. O. Sonig, are to be appointed later.

Attack bid foiled
Security personnel today foiled an attempt by militants to storm an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir, where two Armymen and seven militants were killed since last night.

SA police ready to cooperate with Indian probe
The South African police, on Saturday, agreed to assist their Indian counterparts in investigating the sensational cricket match-fixing scandal, 15 days after the Delhi police case rocked the game world over.

Bindra alleges threat
The former President of the Board of Cricket Control of India, Mr. I. S. Bindra, has stated that he had been receiving threats ever since he made some comments with regard to the match-fixing controversy.

China factor curbing India's NPT entry: U.S.
On the eve of the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference the Clinton administration has made the point that getting India and Pakistan on board the NPT was especially difficult as it involved a third actor, China, which is a complicating factor.
