Varanasi situation `under control'
VARANASI, APRIL 20. Barring a stray incident in which some youths
attempted to damage a place of worship, the overall law and order
situation in the five curfew-bound areas here continued to remain
``tense'' but ``under control'' with security forces maintaining
a strict vigil.
Some youths forcibly entered a place of worship in the cantonment
area of the city last night and damaged a small portion of the
wall and window panes, district magistrate Mr. Alok Kumar said
here.
People of the other community gathered there and shouted slogans
against the government, he said, adding they were, however,
persuaded and dispersed. Two platoons of police and PAC were
deployed outside the place of worship, Mr. Kumar said.
Meanwhile, no fresh untoward incident has been reported from the
curfew bound areas under Chetganj, Luxa, Dashassumer Ghat, Chowk
and Bhelupura police stations, the district magistrate
said.Following the order of the district inspectors of school
postponing the on-going high school and intermediate examinations
in the curfew bound areas, the Banaras Hindu University and Kashi
Vidyapeeth also postponed the examinations scheduled to begin
from yesterday.
Meanwhile a magesterial inquiry has been ordered into the violent
clashes which left one person dead and six others injured.
