Chandrachud panel report on match-fixing tabled in LS
The nearly three-year-old report of the
Chandrachud Committee on match-fixing, termed as a ``whitewash''
job in cricket circles, was placed in the Lok Sabha today with
the Government assuring the House that it would take ``all legal
measures'' to get to the bottom of the truth and not ``hesitate''
to order a detailed investigation by any agency.
Bacher makes more claims
The chairman of the United Cricket Board of
South Africa (UCBSA), Dr. Ali Bacher, has claimed that two
matches during last year's World Cup were fixed, one
international team was throwing and manipulating matches and an
umpire was under suspicion.
No stakes for foreign airlines in domestic sector
The Task Force on Infrastructure, headed by
the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr. K. C. Pant,
today decided to drop the controversial proposal on participation
of foreign airlines in the equity of the domestic airlines.
Rollback tug of war continues
There was no sign today of the Government
being ready to soften the blow it has already delivered in the
matter of cut in food and fertilizer subsidies, the hike in
prices of cooking gas and kerosene, and the more recent cuts in
interest rates on public provident fund.
'Ready to face armsdrop bid'
The Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes,
today informed the Lok Sabha that the Army was prepared to deal
with any situation if Pakistan attempted to airdrop arms for
militants in Jammu and Kashmir as apprehended by the Chief
Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
More equal than others?
If Mr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, senior most
member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal in the Lok Sabha, had his way
the honourable members of Parliament would rather not go through
the security routine at the airports that is prescribed for the
ordinary citizens.
PM 'back to work'
The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari
Vajpayee, is reasonably well and attended to his office work
today. On Wednesday, Mr. Vajpayee could not take part in the
debate in the Lok Sabha as he was feeling unwell; and,
predictably, the officials were keen on downplaying his illness.
Today, the same officials were keen on playing up ``the PM is
back to work'' theme.

The Military Government of Gen Pervez
Musharraf has removed a long-standing discrimination against
Pakistani women whose children are denied the citizenship if they
marry foreign men.
11 Nepalis killed
The United People's Democratic Solidarity, a
militant group operating in the Karbi Anglong district, has
gunned down 11 civilians, all Nepalis, in two separate incidents
yesterday.

Three killed in CPI(M)-TC feud
Three persons, including two
leaders, were killed in attacks and counter-attacks between
activists of CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress (TC) in Kanksa area of
Barddhaman district.
Jamia students continue strike
Students of the Jamia Millia Islamia did not
call off their strike today, despite an assurance by the Lt.
Governor, Mr. Vijai Kapoor, and the Delhi Police Commissioner,
Mr. Ajai Raj Sharma, that the cases registered against some of
them would be withdrawn.
