Varsities to have common website
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, APRIL 10. The Tamil Nadu Government today announced
fresh proposals for expanding the vistas of E-education. The
State Council for Higher Education would launch a common website
for all the Universities in the State, while the Anna University
in Chennai is to offer five PG courses through the Internet from
July.
The web-based PG courses to be offered by the Anna University
will be in the disciplines of computer science, applied
electronics, power systems, structural engineering and
refrigeration and air conditioning.
While computer science as a subject in government schools will be
introduced for class Nine and Ten as well from 2000-01, the
Education Minister, Mr. K. Anbazhagan, moving the demands for
grants for his department in the Assembly, said the remaining
higher secondary schools, uncovered by the programme launched
last year, will also teach computer science from 2000- 01.
The Anna University had also introduced the ``credit banking
policy'', he said. This facilitated students to credit courses
with the institutions recognised by the varsity and accumulate
them for award of degree/diploma.
The Government would also ensure that undergraduate students in
Arts and Science colleges got a minimum of 150-hours of computer
training before they completed their first degree, This would
help students apply computer knowledge in their specialisations
later.
