Integrated approach to tackle north Bihar floods
By Our Staff Correspondent
PATNA, APRIL 10.The Centre has decided to take up with Katmandu
the perennial problem of floods in north Bihar, after relations
are normalised with neighbour in a fortnight, in a bid to
formulate an integrated approach to save the people of the
region.
The Centre has also decided to set up a committee of engineers to
find a solution to another problem.
While the Ganga remains dry for the most part of the year, the
erosion of its embankments during monsoon not only floods
villages, but also poses a threat to rail track, national
highways and Government Undertakings.
The decisions were taken after a meeting between the Union Water
Resources Development Minister, Dr. C.P. Thakur, and his Bihar
counterpart, Mr. Jagdanand Singh, here today. Dr. Thakur
maintained that the External Affairs Ministry had issued
instructions not to hold talks with the Himalayan Kingdom in the
wake of the hijacking of an Indian airlines aircraft last
December, but said relations were likely to be restored in the
next fortnight.
The Centre has accepted the State's suggestion to tackle the
flood problem. The integrated approach includes raising and
strengthening of the embankments of the Lalbakeya, Kamla, Bagmati
and Khando rivers.
For proper coordination between the two countries, Delhi will
open offices in Nepal.
The State Government pointed out that the State had been
suffering damage each year to the tune of Rs.1,200 crores-
Rs.2,000 crores.
