'Politicisation' of ICHR decision 'shocks' historians
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, APRIL. 10. Historians from several universities who
met the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) Chairman,
Prof. B.R. Grover, here today expressed shock and anguish over
the politicisation and communalisation of the ICHR's decision to
`temporarily' withhold publication of the volumes edited by Prof.
K. N. Pannikar and Prof. Sumit Sarkar for their proper scrutiny.
They also appealed to the volume editors and publishers concerned
(Oxford University Press) to cooperate with the ICHR in discharge
of its ``academic and legal obligation'' in fulfillment of the
original objective of the Towards Freedom project.
According to a release by the ICHR, the historians also requested
the ICHR Chairman to immediately bring out supplementary volumes
to the Freedom Movement volumes edited by Prof. Basudev Chatterji
and Mr. P.S. Gupta.
The meeting was attended by, among others, Prof. S.R. Mehrotra
from Shimla, Prof. S.K.Gupta, Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh
University, Prof. Hari Om from Jammu, Mr.J.K. Sharma from
Chandigarh, Mr. Mukhan Lal, Director, Delhi Heritage Institute,
Ms. Meenakshi Jain, Ms. Sushma Yadav and Mr. Atul Rawat.
