Maharashtra Cong.(I) resolves to form govt. on its own

MUMBAI, APRIL 8. Several leading lights of the Maharashtra Congress(I), including the MPCC(I) chief, Mr. Govindrao Adik, today went into an eight-hour huddle to resolve that the party should form a government on its own strength but did not specify how and when.

They went to the extent of accusing the Nationalist Congress Party, which is in alliance with the Congress(I) in the State Government despite its political differences, especially on the Congress(I)'s president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi's origins, of being responsible for ``furthering anti-progressive forces'' such as the BJP and the Shiv Sena.

Mr. Adik told The Hindu that this was the substance of what the NCP achieved by breaking the Congress(I) and forming its own outfit. He clarified it was not in the current context ``but what had happened a year ago when the party was split here''.

The leaders who attended this conclave at the Congress(I) headquarters here included Mr. S. B. Chavan, Mr. Mr. Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar - both ex-CMs - Mr. Shivraj Patil, former Speaker of Lok Sabha, Mr. Nasikrao Tirupude, former Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Shivajirao Deshmukh and Mr. Prataprao Bhosle, former party chiefs.
