Muthiah files appeal in HC

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 3. The former Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker and AIADMK leader, Mr. R. Muthiah, today filed an appeal in the Madras High Court challenging the order of a special court which convicted him in the ``disproportionate wealth case.''

While convicting him, the Special Judge-I, Mr. S. Sambandham, had, on March 8, sentenced Mr. Muthiah to undergo 25 months' rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 5,000. The AIADMK leader's two sons, charged with abetment, were also convicted and sentenced to a similar term. The Judge had suspended the operation of the substantial portion of the sentence till April 10 to enable the accused to file appeal.

Contending that the lower court had clubbed different persons and held a joint trial ``which amounted to misjoinder of charges and thereby rendering the whole trial as vitiated,'' Mr. Muthiah, in his appeal, prayed for setting aside the order. He also sought suspension of the sentence till the disposal of the appeal.

His two sons also filed similar appeals.
