Hingis downs Davenport
MIAMI, APRIL 2. Lindsay Davenport will leave Miami with the
number one ranking, but Martina hingis walks away with her 28th
career title and renewed vigour in her rivalry with the big-
hitting American after a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory in the final
of the Ericsson Open final on Saturday.
Hingis, who also won this event in 1997, snapped Davenport's 21-
match winning streak while ending a personal five- match losing
streak to big Californian. Hingis earned $ 350,000 for the
victory while Davenport received $ 175,000.
With her second title of the year freshly under her belt, the
top-seeded Hingis was gracious about turning over the top spot to
Davenport when the new WTA Tour rankings are issued.
``Lindsay is a great champion,'' said the Swiss teen. ``She had a
great run. Congratulations to her, she's taking over my number
one spot. I hope we will have many more finals''.
``It's nice to win a big one again. Lindsay has had only one loss
this year and she deserves to be number one,'' added Hingis.
