Govt. to intensify livestock protection programme

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, APRIL. 2. The Tamil Nadu Government would expand its programme of organising camps for detection of incipient sickness and ensuring the health of livestock, in intensifying its recently launched comprehensive scheme for livestock development in the State.

With the first phase of the programme evoking good response from farmers and creating an awareness about livestock health, more camps at the Panchayat Union level for every village under the ambit of a sub-dispensary will be organised, the Government said. This will mean holding 385 camps every month. Taking livestock medicine to the doors of the ordinary farmer is a key aspect of this programme, for which a new thrust had been given when the Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi launched the initiative in January last at Thirukazhakundram in Chengalpattu district.

In the 722 camps held so far in different parts of the State, over 25 lakh livestock animals including cows, buffaloes and sheep have benefitted from this programme, the release said. Veterinary doctors and experts have fully contributed to the success of these camps. While in 1995-96, the Government had spent Rs. 5.61 crores for veterinary medicines, last year it had spent Rs. 9.62 crores.
