Fascist trends growing: convention

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 2. Participants at a convention on ``Fascist attack on democratic rights and institutions'' here today expressed concern over growing negative trends in Indian political and civil society and resolved to work unitedly for a social order founded on truth, built on justice and graced by love.

The growing attacks by the Sangh Parivar and its constituents on minorities, Dalits, tribals, women and unorganised workers; the increasing incidents of burning or destruction of places of worship of minorities, the massacre of minorities and the banning of socio-cultural events, besides a demand for replacement of the Parliamentary form with the Presidential system were all indications of the negative trends, a declaration said.

``We apprehend that the review of the Constitution would be used by the Sangh Parivar to attack the basic principles that give the Constitution its distinct character. We are also deeply concerned about the strident utterances of the newly-nominated RSS president that the Constitution should be `scrapped' and replaced with a new Constitution establishing a `Hindu Rashtra' envisaging one religion, one culture concept. Further, his characterisation of Muslims as aliens and his call for an epic war between the Hindutva and anti-Hindutva forces are very disturbing,'' the declaration said.

The attacks on Muslims and Christians were only devices on the part of the Sangh Parivar to capture total political power, the declaration pointed out.

The convention, organised by the Insaani Ekta Muhim, also deplored the massacre of Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir and of Dalits in Karnataka.
