Allied Forces & Polar Falcon take the plums

By H.S. Manjunath

BANGALORE, APRIL 1. Allied Forces and Polar Falcon beat their rivals pointless to emerge as the country's best stayer and sprinter as the first phase of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend was gone through before a crowd of nearly 10,000 at the Bangalore race course today.

Aslam Kader put the Wills Stayers Trophy in the right perspective when he said at the presentation that he knew he was a winner at the 600. So well was this six-year-old Razeen- Gourgandine gelding travelling into the turn that Saddle Up's chase was rendered futile in no time. Trainer Darius Byramji, who had sent out Allied Forces in shipshape, drew comfort from the fact that his charge did well to level the head-to-head count with Saddle up at 2-2. Thus Allied Forces, the joint property of Mr. Deepak Khaitan and Maj. P.K. Mehra, avenged his narrow defeat at the hands of Saddle Up in the Queen Elizebath Cup (2,800m) at Calcutta some time ago.

Super Sunrise cut the wind till the turn and stayed on to finish third ahead of Nicodamus who was found woefully wanting in the straight.

Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy-owned Polar Falcon showed plenty of toe in landing the Wills Sprinters' Trophy ahead of So Royal whose early dash was neutralised a furlong from home. Richard Hughes rode a confident finish as Polar Falcon never far away from action pressed and passed So Royal midway up the straight to return a comfortable winner. Veteran Jim Foley trains the winner. In the words of Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, plans are afoot to send Polar Falcon to race in Singapore.

Appu and Aslam Kader shared the riding honours with a treble each. Richard Hughes got a double. Darius Byramji and Jim Foley saddled three winners each.

Jockeys fined:

Zia Akhtar, rider of ThekingandI was fined Rs. 1,000 by the Stipendiary Stewards for checking his mount during the early stages of the Delhi Trophy (Div II) for no apparent reason.

Paul Eddery, rider of Telegram in the Mooney Valley Racing Club Trophy was fined Rs. 1,000 for not observing the unsaddling formalities at the Enclosure provided there for in the paddock.
