Suspect dies in police custody

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 1. A 45-year old man, caught soon after he allegedly committed a daylight robbery at a jewellery shop in Connaught Place here on Friday, died under mysterious circumstances in the Tilak Marg police station lock-up on Saturday morning.

While an enquiry is being conducted by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Connaught Place), the officer investigating the robbery case, Sub-Inspector Subhash Chand, has been suspended.

The Delhi police maintain that the suspect, Lekh Raj, did not die because of custodial violence. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. S. M. Bhaskar, said the deceased was reportedly undergoing psychiatric treatment and died in his sleep.

Statements of four other inmates who were in the lock-up with Lekh Raj had been recorded by the SDM. The National Human Rights Commission was also informed promptly.
