Moopanar plans Opposition meet
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, APRIL 1. In a bid to bring the Opposition parties closer
and orchestrate a joint campaign against the BJP-led Central
Government, the TMC president, Mr. G.K. Moopanar, will organise a
convention of the Opposition leaders in Delhi soon.
Disclosing this to the media today, he said he would meet the
leaders, including the Congress (I) president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi,
and former Prime Ministers, during his visit to Delhi tomorrow.
The meet would discuss larger issues, including hike in PDS rice,
kerosene, LPG cylinders and other essential items, he added.
Stating that the `effective' functioning of the Opposition had
forced the Gujarat Government to withdraw the controversial order
allowing Government staff to join the RSS, he said, the proposed
meet would initiate efforts for joint Opposition campaign against
the policies of Centre.
Describing the installation of the Congress(I)-TMC coalition
Government in Pondicherry as a `happy augury', the TMC leader
said, he would thank Mrs. Gandhi, when he met her tomorrow.
To a query on the reported cross-voting during the Rajya Sabha
polls, he said that elections to the Upper House should be
avoided `wherever possible'. For instance, if a candidate with
the required numerical strength obtained the signatures of the
voters on the nomination paper, he should be declared elected,
without holding an election, Mr. Moopanar suggested.
