'100 p.c. equity in SEZs likely'

By Sushma Ramachandran

NEW DELHI, APRIL 1. The Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr. Murasoli Maran, today said the new Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to be set up in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu may allow 100 per cent foreign equity in all sectors.

In an interview to The Hindu, he ruled out any flexibility in labour laws in the SEZs. The only modification being sought is to consider units with over 50 per cent export obligation as public utility services. Mr. Maran refuted impressions that lifting of quantitative restrictions (QRs) will lead to a flood of consumer goods imports into the country.
