CB CID team in Dharmapuri

CHENNAI, FEB. 5. The State Minister for Electricity, Mr. Arcot Veerasamy, today released survey reports on the biomass potentials of Lalgudi and Ponneri taluks.

Mr. Veerasamy, who inaugurated a day-long workshop on the ``national biomass gasifier programme'' organised by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) in cooperation with the Union Ministry of Non- Conventional Energy Sources (MNES), said compared to power generation from coal transported from eastern India and Andhra Pradesh and from naphtha, not to say of solar energy, power from biomass would be much cheaper, at Rs. 3.25 crores to Rs. 3.5 crores per MW, apart from being environmentally friendly.

Setting up of biomass power generation plants would also help expand rural employment and incomes, he said, referring to the Central government subsidy of 40 per cent for installation of gasifiers.

Manufacturers of gasifiers and entrepreneurs operating rice mills held discussions at the workshop on the technical and economic aspects of biomass generation.
